Behind the Headlines: Stories That Inspire Beyond the News

In highlighting the realities of contemporary society, Behind the Headlines brings to light remarkable stories of courage, resilience, and achievement that rarely find a place in mainstream news. It offers a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of disabled soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces and ordinary citizens with disabilities who have transformed adversity into opportunity.

This is the only journal dedicated to documenting the inspiring journeys of paraplegic soldiers and other persons with disabilities—many of them talented individuals from rural India—who sustained life-changing injuries while serving the nation. Despite physical challenges, social barriers, policy constraints, and uncertain circumstances, they have demonstrated extraordinary determination, converting setbacks into opportunities for growth and leadership. Their achievements remind us that an inclusive society is built through the collective responsibility of citizens, institutions, and the State.

Rapid advances in communication and information technology have connected communities across the globe. More importantly, they have revealed countless examples of ordinary citizens displaying extraordinary responsibility, compassion, and selfless "soldierly deeds." These quiet acts of service have rekindled hope, inspired positive change, and transformed lives without attracting media attention. Development is a shared responsibility, and in an interconnected world, every individual possesses the potential to contribute meaningfully. When knowledge, experience, and grassroots action come together, they create lasting social transformation and make inclusive growth a living reality. The ultimate vision is Inclusive Nation Building.

A defining quality shared by many of these individuals is grit—the perseverance and passion to pursue long-term goals despite setbacks and adversity. Research consistently shows that grit is often a stronger predictor of success than intelligence alone, as it provides the resilience to remain focused and committed through challenges. Grit is not merely persistence; it is the unwavering determination to continue despite obstacles, coupled with a sustained passion for meaningful purpose. Those who embody grit remain steadfast in their commitment to improving not only their own lives but also the lives of others. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which came into force in July 2016, affirms the right of every person with disability to equality, dignity, freedom, and full participation in society. It recognizes persons with long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments whose interaction with societal barriers restricts their effective participation and who may require varying levels of support. The true spirit of the Act lies not merely in legislation but in its implementation through informed communities, responsive institutions, and active public participation.

Empowered citizens strengthen community consciousness, and strong communities, in turn, strengthen democratic governance. Greater people's participation leads to inclusive development, while grassroots information and lived experiences help shape effective policies, innovative strategies, and meaningful implementation. Restoring the dignity of persons with disabilities is both a social obligation and a measure of a nation's commitment to justice, equity, and sustainable development. Simply put, People Matter - Results Count.

Through these inspiring stories—stories witnessed but seldom reported by mainstream media—we seek to remind every stakeholder that no challenge is insurmountable. With determination, perseverance, and collective support, individuals can overcome barriers and realize their aspirations. At the same time, these narratives encourage greater awareness, compassion, and community participation, reinforcing the belief that inclusive development begins at the grassroots.

Together, we can transform individual courage into collective progress, restore dignity where it has been denied, and build a society where every person has the opportunity to contribute, belong, and thrive.

Together We Can Make It Happen.
